Slack Yellow Dot: Slack Has No Yellow Status

Slack only has two availability states, and neither one is yellow. If you see a yellow dot, it's a theme, an emoji, or a different app.

Slack doesn't have a yellow status. The availability dot next to a name is either filled green (active) or a hollow circle (away).

So if you searched "why is my Slack status yellow," you're looking at something else that happens to be yellow. There are four places it usually comes from, and the theme is the one I'd check first because it's the easiest to do by accident.

What Slack's dot can show

Slack's availability help page lists two states. You're active when Slack is open on your desktop or phone. You're away after 10 minutes of desktop inactivity, or when you leave or close the mobile app.

The z is the one I'd expect to confuse more people than yellow, and it has its own page.

Where the yellow comes from

Start with the theme. Slack lets you build a custom theme under Preferences, then Appearance, then Custom theme, and (if I'm remembering the picker right) one of the color swatches there is for presence. Pick a mustard palette, or apply one somebody pasted into a channel, and every active dot in your sidebar turns that color until you change it back. Nobody else sees it.

If the yellow thing has tiny clock hands, it's Microsoft Teams. Teams shows away as a yellow clock and Outlook borrows the same icon, and plenty of people have both apps open all day. The timers there are different too: see how long before Teams shows away.

Then there's the status emoji. A custom status puts an emoji next to the name, right beside the dot, so a coworker with a yellow circle or a sun as their status looks like they have a yellow dot until you hover over it.

Last one, and I'm least sure about it: a connection warning. Slack uses warning yellow when it can't reach its servers. I haven't managed to trigger this on purpose, so I can't tell you which icon shows up where, but "slack yellow triangle" sits right beside "slack yellow dot" in Google's suggestions. When everyone's dot looks wrong at the same moment it's probably the connection, and Slack showing everyone offline covers that.

Never appear "away" on Slack again

Cloud-based. No downloads. Works 24/7 even when your laptop is off.

Why so many people call it yellow

Teams, Outlook, Skype before them, and half the chat apps of the last twenty years used green, yellow and red. Slack went with filled and hollow, and people kept saying "I went yellow" anyway.

We do it too. A few older posts on this blog say "yellow dot" when they mean away, and our own dashboard draws away as a yellow ring.

If your dot is yellow and it bothers you

Go to Preferences, Appearance, and switch back to a default Slack theme. If the color still looks off after that, check whether your OS has a color filter or night mode turned on, since those tint everything on screen. Night Shift on a Mac warms every color after sunset, green included.

And if what you really mean is "my dot keeps going away while I'm working," that's the 10-minute timer, and no theme changes it. The practical fixes are in how to stop Slack from showing away. We make Slack Green for that case. Try a second monitor with Slack parked on it before you pay for anything.

Does Slack have any other dot colors?

Not for availability. Red badges are unread mentions and have nothing to do with presence, and the red dot that won't go away is a notification problem.
