How to write a Slack status people read
- Type the status. The part shaded yellow is cut from the profile card, so put what you are doing, until when, and who to ask in front of it.
- Pick an emoji. The sidebar and your messages show only the emoji, so pick one that says it alone, or make a custom one such as OOO or 3PM.
- Pick a Duration. The tooltip in the preview shows the Until line Slack adds.
- In Slack press Cmd+Shift+Y (Ctrl+Shift+Y on Windows), paste the text, pick the emoji, set Duration, and Save.
Frequently asked questions
Where do people see my Slack status?
In the sidebar and next to your name on every message, Slack shows only the emoji, at 16 pixels. Hovering that emoji shows a tooltip with the full text and the end time. Clicking your name opens the profile card, which shows one line of text. The full profile shows the whole text.
Why is my Slack status cut off?
The profile card gives the status text one line: 280 pixels of 15 px Lato, then an ellipsis. That is about 40 characters of normal text. "Deep in the Q3 pricing deck, replies after 3pm. Ping Ana for billing" shows as "Deep in the Q3 pricing deck, replies afte…". The tooltip and the full profile show the rest.
How long can a Slack status be?
Up to 100 characters. Slack counts Unicode characters, so an emoji typed into the text counts as 1 and is saved as its :name:, while a combined emoji such as 👩💻 counts as 3. Over 100, the Slack dialog shows a red negative count and will not save, and the API returns too_long.
What are the Duration options for a Slack status?
Don't clear, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, Today, This week, and Choose a start and end time. Today ends at 11:59 PM and the tooltip says Until tomorrow. This week ends Friday at 11:59 PM and the tooltip says Until next week. The field used to be called Remove status after.
Can I use a custom emoji as my Slack status?
Yes. Upload it first: in the status emoji menu, click Add Emoji at the bottom. Then pick it like any other emoji. It shows at 16 pixels in the sidebar and message header, so keep it to 3 or 4 bold letters or one clear shape. Slack takes a PNG or GIF under 128 KB; the custom emoji made here is checked against that.
What does Slack show if my status has no emoji?
A speech balloon, 💬 (:speech_balloon:). Slack fills it in when you save a status with text and no emoji.
Can I schedule a Slack status?
Yes, one at a time. In the Set a status dialog, open Duration and pick Choose a start and end time. Slack holds up to 5 scheduled statuses and none repeat; the Slack status scheduler on this site fills all 5 from a weekly plan.
Does a status change my active or away dot?
No. The status text and emoji are separate from the green presence dot. Slack counts only input inside its own window, so you turn away after about 10 minutes without it, whatever your status says.
Can I set the status from a script?
Yes. Copy the users.profile.set JSON from the tool. It has status_text, status_emoji, and status_expiration, a Unix time in seconds where 0 means it never clears. Send it with a user token that has the users.profile:write scope.
