Do not disturb in Microsoft Teams is the red status with a white bar. It stops Teams notification banners from popping up and sends incoming calls to voicemail. Chat messages still arrive, and people on your priority access list still get through. To turn it on, select your profile picture, select your current status, then Do not disturb, or type /dnd in the search box. Microsoft's presence documentation says a Do not disturb you set yourself lasts one day unless you give it a duration.

This page covers what Do not disturb blocks, how it differs from Busy, why Teams sometimes turns it on by itself, and how to turn it off. If you also work in Slack, where the problem usually runs the other way, Slack Green keeps your Slack status green from a server during the hours you set.

Teams Do not disturb: banners hidden, calls to voicemail, messages still arrive, resets after one day

What Do not disturb means in Teams

In Teams' ranking of statuses, Do not disturb sits below Busy, In a meeting and In a call, and above Be right back, Away and Offline. Coworkers see a red circle with a white bar next to your name, and the words "Do not disturb" on your profile card. Microsoft's help page describes it as the status for when you "want to focus or present your screen and don't want to receive notifications."

It changes two things for you and one thing for everyone else:

  • • For you, message banners and sounds stop, and calls go straight to voicemail.
  • • For others, your dot turns red, so they know a reply may take a while.
  • It does not stop anything from being delivered. Every chat message lands in Teams as usual, and your Activity feed still counts mentions. When you switch back, it is all there.

How to turn on Do not disturb in Teams

Desktop app or Teams on the web

  • Select your profile picture at the top right.
  • Select your current status under your name.
  • Select Do not disturb.
  • From the search box. Type the command in the search box at the top of Teams and press Enter:

    /dnd Do not disturb
    /busy Busy
    /available back to Available
    /brb Be right back
    /away Away
    /offline Appear offline

Phone app. Tap your profile picture, tap your current status, then tap Do not disturb. Your status belongs to your account, so it shows the same on every device you are signed in on.

Set Do not disturb for a fixed time

Without a duration, Teams keeps a manual Do not disturb for one day, then goes back to working out your status from your activity and calendar. To choose the end time yourself:

  • Select your profile picture, your current status, then Duration.
  • Under Status, pick Do not disturb.
  • Under Reset status after, pick a time, or Custom for a date and time.
  • Select Done.
  • How long a manual Teams status lasts without a duration: Appear offline indefinitely, Busy and Do not disturb one day, others seven days

The same rules from Microsoft's admin page, as a table:

Manual statusHow long it lasts without a duration
    Do not disturb1 day
    Busy1 day
    Appear offlineUntil you change it
    Any other status7 days

Teams has no weekly schedule for Do not disturb. For a daily quiet block, book focus time in your Outlook calendar through Viva Insights; Teams then shows Focusing and silences notifications until the block ends.

Priority access: who still gets through

Never appear "away" on Slack again

Cloud-based. No downloads. Works 24/7 even when your laptop is off.

Priority access is the exception list for Do not disturb. Messages from people on it still show banners, and their calls still ring.

  • Select Settings and more (the three dots next to your profile picture), then Settings.
  • Select Privacy.
  • Under Do not disturb, select Manage priority access and add names.
  • Put your manager and anyone who covers on-call work on it. Everyone else sees your red dot and waits.

Busy vs Do not disturb in Teams

Both show a red dot, so coworkers often cannot tell them apart at a glance. The difference is what reaches you.

Busy vs Do not disturb in Teams: Busy still shows notifications and rings calls; Do not disturb hides banners and sends calls to voicemail

Busy says "I am working and may be slow to reply." Do not disturb says "I will not see this until later." If you want to look occupied without muting anything, Busy or a calendar block is the better fit; how to look busy on Teams covers those options. What every colour and symbol means is in Microsoft Teams status icons meaning.

Why Teams puts you on Do not disturb by itself

If your status turns red with a white bar without you choosing it, one of these is usually the cause:

  • • You are sharing your screen or presenting. Teams switches to Do not disturb, shown as Presenting, so banners do not appear on the shared screen. Turn it off under Settings, Privacy, then clear Set my status to Do not disturb when I'm sharing my screen.
  • • An earlier status is still running. A Do not disturb you set on your phone or another computer applies everywhere, for up to a day.
  • • Focus time is on your calendar. Viva Insights focus blocks show as Focusing and mute notifications the same way; see what does Focusing mean in Teams.
  • • You picked Busy or Available while Teams already had you on Do not disturb. Microsoft's rules only let you choose a status less available than the one Teams worked out, so during a presentation you cannot switch to Available.
  • On the Microsoft Q&A forum, several users reported Teams switching them back to Do not disturb every 15 to 30 minutes with nothing on their calendar and Windows Focus assist off. One user's case cleared up on its own after two weeks, after a support ticket that did not find the cause. If none of the causes above apply, sign out of Teams on every device, sign back in, and open a ticket with your IT team.

How to turn off Do not disturb in Teams

Never appear "away" on Slack again

Cloud-based. No downloads. Works 24/7 even when your laptop is off.

  • • Select your profile picture, your current status, then Reset status. Teams goes back to setting your status from your activity, calendar and computer state.
  • • Or pick Available, or type /available in the search box.
  • • On the phone app, tap your profile picture, your status, then Reset status or Available.
  • If it keeps coming back, check the causes in the section above. A status set with a long duration on another device is the most common one.

Teams, Windows and phone Do not disturb are separate

Three different switches share the name:

  • • Teams Do not disturb changes your status and hides Teams banners.
  • • Windows 11 Do not disturb (and Focus on macOS) hides banners from every app, Teams included. Your Teams status does not change; coworkers still see you as Available.
  • • Phone Do not disturb or Focus mutes the Teams app on that phone only. Teams on your computer is not affected. The Teams mobile app also has its own quiet hours schedule, under your profile picture, Notifications, then Block during quiet hours; see Teams quiet hours.
  • If notifications vanished and your dot is still green, the operating system is the one muting them.

Do not disturb etiquette in Teams

  • • Messaging someone on Do not disturb is fine. It does not ping them. They read it when they come back.
  • • Calling someone on Do not disturb sends you to their voicemail. If it is urgent, send a chat message and wait, or reach them another way.
  • • Add a status message such as "Heads down until 3, call my mobile if it is urgent." It shows when people open a chat with you.
  • • Set a duration so you do not stay red for the rest of the day by accident.
  • Do not disturb on Slack

Never appear "away" on Slack again

Cloud-based. No downloads. Works 24/7 even when your laptop is off.

Slack's version is called Pause notifications. It mutes your notifications and puts a small Z on your dot. Unlike Teams, Slack lets you schedule it for the same hours every day. The steps are in Slack Do Not Disturb. The opposite problem, Slack switching you to away after 10 minutes without input, is the one Slack Green solves.
