Urgent: @mention me.' 30 statuses for busy days, slow replies and catching up, the emoji to use, and when to pause notifications too.

A Slack status for limited availability tells people you are around but slow, until when, and what to do if it cannot wait. For example: ⏳ "Limited availability today, replies after 3 PM. Urgent: @mention me." A Slack status holds up to 100 characters, which fits all three. Set Remove status after to the end of the busy stretch, and if you also want quiet, check Pause notifications; coworkers then see a small Z on your picture as well.

We set the example as a real status on 7 October 2026. The profile shows it in full, with the hourglass, and the presence line above it still reads Active:

Slack profile with the status Limited availability today. Replies after 3 PM. Urgent: @mention me, an hourglass emoji, and Active with a green dot above it

Limited availability statuses

Each is 60 characters or fewer, so there is room to add a name or a time. Slack's limit is exact: in our test a 100-character status saved, and 101 characters returned the error too_long. Change the times and names.

Slack status emoji for limited availability

EmojiCodeSays
🎧:headphones:Heads down, focus time
⏳:hourglass_flowing_sand:Slow replies, wait a bit
📆:calendar:In meetings
🐢:turtle:Slow to respond
📥:inbox_tray:Catching up
⛔:no_entry:Urgent only
✈️:airplane:Travelling
🔕:no_bell:Notifications off

We set each of these 8 codes as a status on 7 October 2026, and Slack accepted all of them. Slack sets 🎧 on its own during huddles, so some people pick ⏳ or 🐢 for "busy" to avoid confusion. More on what status emoji signal is in Slack status icons meaning.

Status, Pause notifications, or both?

  • • A status explains why you are slow. It changes nothing about notifications.
  • • Pause notifications stops alerts and adds a small Z to your picture. People can still message you, and can choose to notify you anyway.
  • • Both, with the same end time, is best for a focus block. When you set the status, check Pause notifications and pick the same Remove status after time.
  • • A notification schedule handles the same quiet hours every day. See Slack Do Not Disturb.
  • How to set a limited availability status

  • Click your profile picture, then Update your status, or press Cmd+Shift+Y (Ctrl+Shift+Y).
  • Paste the status and pick the emoji.
  • Under Remove status after, pick the time your busy stretch ends, or Today.
  • Check Pause notifications if you want quiet too.
  • Click Save.

To set it ahead of time, choose a start and end time; see how to schedule a Slack status. More ready-made statuses are in Slack status examples.
