Is Slack End-to-End Encrypted? No. Here Is Who Can Read It
No, Slack is not end-to-end encrypted. It encrypts messages and files in transit and at rest, but Slack holds the keys, so its servers can read your data and workspace owners can export it on some plans. No, Slack is not end-to-end encrypted. Slack encrypts messages and files while they travel between your device and its servers, and again when they are stored. Slack holds the keys, though, so its servers can decrypt your messages to search, index and deliver them. Your company can export them on some plans. Enterprise Grid customers can add Slack Enterprise Key Management (EKM) to control the keys in their own Amazon KMS account. That limits Slack's access, but it is still not end to end. Signal and WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted by default, so only the sender and the recipient can read them.

What Slack encrypts
Slack's security page states that customer data is encrypted at rest and in transit by default. In practice that means:

Slack's security practices page adds that it follows ISO 27001, ISO 27002 and ISO 27018, and that GovSlack is run for US government customers. Those are controls around the servers. None of them stops Slack or your employer from reading the content.
Where your Slack message can be read
A message leaves your device encrypted, and Slack's servers decrypt it. It is then stored encrypted, but with keys Slack can use. That is what lets Slack search your history, show link previews, run Slack AI and deliver the message to a new device. It also means three parties besides the recipient can reach it:
- • Slack, for operations and when served with valid legal process.

- • Apps you or your admins install, within the scopes they were granted.

Slack Enterprise Key Management (EKM)

EKM is an add-on for Enterprise Grid. Your company keeps the encryption keys in its own AWS Key Management Service account, and Slack asks for them each time it needs to decrypt. Admins can revoke access to one channel, one time range or the whole organization, and Slack loses the ability to read that data. It is a kill switch for the company, and it does not hide messages from the company. Nobody on Free, Pro or Business+ has it.

Is Slack secure?
