Can Slack See Deleted Messages? What Your Company Can Recover
A deleted Slack message disappears for everyone, admins included. We checked as a workspace Owner: the Free plan does not track deletions, the Standard Export leaves out deletion logs, and only paid-plan retention or a legal hold keeps a copy.

Yes. When you delete a Slack message, it is deleted for everyone in the conversation, including admins, and Slack sends no notification about it. There is no "delete for me" option. Whether your company can still read it depends on the workspace's retention setting. On the Free plan Slack does not track deletions at all. On paid plans an Owner can choose to save edits and deletions, and then a deleted message can turn up in a full export or an eDiscovery tool.
We checked the Free plan side in our own workspace as its Primary Owner on October 1, 2026: the retention options, the export page, and what a deleted message leaves behind. The paid-plan rows below come from Slack's help center, because our test workspace is on Free. If you use Microsoft Teams at work, the same question is answered in can my employer see deleted Teams messages.
Does Slack keep deleted messages?
On the Free plan, no. The retention menu an Owner sees has two choices, and the default is Keep all messages, but don't track edits or deletions. The other is Keep for 90 days, including messages in Slack Connect channels. Never delete messages and Choose custom timeline are greyed out as paid features.
The note under the menu says messages older than 90 days stay hidden on Free but are kept by Slack, and come back if the workspace moves to a paid plan. That applies to old messages, not deleted ones.
| Retention setting | Plans | Deleted message kept? |
|---|---|---|
| Keep all messages, but don't track edits or deletions | Free (default, seen in our workspace) | No |
| Keep for 90 days | Free (seen in our workspace) | No |
| Never delete messages, save edits | Pro, Business+, Enterprise (help center) | Yes, with edit and deletion history |
| Never delete messages, don't save edits | Pro, Business+, Enterprise (help center) | No |
| Legal hold on your account | Enterprise (help center) | Yes, while the hold is on |
Members cannot see which setting their workspace uses. Ask your admin, or check the company's policy documents. The full retention rules, including files, are in Slack message retention.
Can my boss read deleted Slack messages?
Not in the Slack app. Your boss sees the message vanish like everyone else. A deleted message can reach your company only through exported data.
On Free and Pro, the export an Owner can start is the Standard Export. In our workspace the export page lists what it leaves out: messages in private channels, messages in direct messages, and Editing and deletion logs.
So on those plans a deleted message is out of reach for the company. On Business+ and Enterprise, Slack's help center says Owners can apply for exports of all channels and DMs, and on Enterprise the Discovery API includes edited and deleted content if retention or a legal hold preserved it. How legal holds and subpoenas work is in can Slack messages be subpoenaed. Who can export what, plan by plan, is in can Slack admins see DMs.
What does a deleted Slack message leave behind?
Usually nothing. Slack asks once, Are you sure you want to delete this message? This cannot be undone., and the message is gone for every member on every device.
The deletion happens on Slack's servers, not on your screen, which is why it reaches every member. We posted a test message in a DM on 6 October 2026, read it back through the API, deleted it, and read again:
chat.postMessage -> ts 1791271498.852099, "sg-w1-1006pm delete-for-everyone test"
conversations.history (latest = that ts) -> the message
chat.delete -> ok
conversations.history (latest = that ts) -> an older message; the test message is gone
conversations.replies (ts = that ts) -> thread_not_found
The exception is a message with thread replies. We deleted a parent message that had one reply. Slack replaced it with This message was deleted., with no name and no time on it, and kept the reply under it. In the API the placeholder is a message with the subtype tombstone; which token may delete whose message is in Slack chat.delete. When we then deleted the reply, the placeholder went away too.
An edited message shows (edited) after the text, as in the second message below. Coworkers cannot open the earlier version in the app.
Slack does not notify anyone that you deleted a message. What deleting cannot remove:
- • Desktop, phone and email notifications that already reached someone.
- • Screenshots or pasted copies.
- • The copy your company keeps if a paid-plan retention setting saves deletions, or a legal hold is on.
- • In a Slack Connect channel, the copy kept under the other company's retention settings.
Never appear "away" on Slack again
Cloud-based. No downloads. Works 24/7 even when your laptop is off.
How to recover deleted Slack messages
To keep something before you delete it, copy the text. Saving it to Later does not keep a copy after deletion.
Who can delete messages in Slack
Members can delete their own messages. Slack's help center says Owners and admins can also delete other people's. On our Free workspace the Message Editing setting controls only how long people can edit, from Never to Any time. Deleting your account does not delete your messages; see how to delete your Slack account.
FAQ
Does deleting a Slack DM delete it for the other person?
Yes. It disappears for both of you, and nobody is notified. What edits, leaves and forwards show is in does Slack notify when you leave a channel.
