Can Slack Admins See Your DMs? What Each Plan Allows

No Slack admin can open your direct messages in the Slack app and read them. There is no button for that on any plan. Your DMs can still reach your company through a data export. Owners on Business+ and Org Owners on Enterprise can export DMs after they apply for the export tool. On Free and Pro, an Owner has to apply to Slack each time, and Slack approves only for valid legal process, member consent, or a legal requirement.

We opened the admin pages of our own Slack workspace as its Primary Owner on October 1, 2026. The workspace is on the Free plan, so the screenshots show what a Free or Pro Owner gets. The Business+ and Enterprise rows below come from Slack's help center.

What an Owner sees on the export page

The export an Owner can start without asking Slack is the Standard Export. Our export page lists what it covers: messages and file links in public channels, and app activity. Under What's not included it lists private channels, direct messages, and editing and deletion logs.

The admin menu has no other way into DMs. The member list offers profile and account actions, and the Analytics pages show counts.

What admin analytics show about DMs

Analytics shows how much of the workspace's reading happens in DMs, as a share. In our workspace the Where conversations happen chart read 86% in direct messages, 10% in public channels and 4% in private channels for the last 28 days. It shows no names, no conversations and no message text.

The same page says paid plans unlock more message and file data, and Slack's help center lists per-member counts such as days active and messages posted. Those are counts too, not message text.

Who can export your DMs, plan by plan

Free and Pro. Slack's guide says Owners "may contact Slack and apply to export content from all channels and conversations, including private channels and direct messages". Slack rejects the application unless the Owner shows valid legal process, consent of members, or a requirement or right under applicable law, "in each instance". What happens when a court or the police asks is in can Slack messages be subpoenaed.

Business+. Owners can apply once for a self-serve export tool. After approval they can export public channels, private channels and DMs "as needed and permitted by law", and schedule weekly or monthly exports. Slack puts the legal duty on the Owner: they must have the right employment agreements and policies in place.

Enterprise. Org Owners can export by conversation type, by member, or everything one person was part of. They can also turn on the Discovery API, which connects Slack to eDiscovery and data loss prevention (DLP) tools such as Global Relay, Smarsh, Proofpoint and Nightfall. A DLP tool scans messages, DMs included, for things like card numbers.

How a DM actually gets read

An export is a ZIP of JSON files, one folder per conversation. To read your DMs from it, someone has to download the export and search the files. On Business+ it covers the whole workspace. On Enterprise, an Org Owner can export only your conversations, and an eDiscovery tool makes them searchable.

An export only has what Slack still stores. On our Free workspace the retention menu offers Keep all messages, but don't track edits or deletions (the default) or Keep for 90 days. On paid plans an Owner can also choose Never delete messages, save edits, which keeps deleted and edited versions. On Enterprise, Slack says the Discovery API includes "content that has been edited and deleted (if preserved by retention policies or legal holds)". What admins can see without any export

• • Public channel messages. Anyone in the workspace can read these.
• • Access logs on paid plans: sign-in times, IP address and device. On our Free workspace the workspace-wide log API returned paid_only on September 29, 2026, while each member's own log at /account/logs worked.
• • Analytics: counts and shares like the chart above.
• • Your presence dot, the same green or grey dot everyone sees; see Slack away status meaning.

Slack itself does not record your mouse movements, your keystrokes in other apps, or your screen; the desktop app reads only how long the computer has been idle; see does Slack track mouse movement. Monitoring software your company installs on a work laptop is a different matter, and Slack settings do not limit it. Are Slack DMs private?

From your coworkers, yes. Nobody else in the workspace can see a DM they are not part of. From your employer, no. Slack's guide says customers may need, or be legally compelled, to export content, for example after a harassment report or under a court order. Slack is not end-to-end encrypted, which is why exports can include DMs at all.

Treat a work Slack DM like a work email. Your company owns the workspace. If a message would be a problem in an investigation, do not send it on the work Slack. The Microsoft Teams answer is in can my employer read my Teams chats.

Is Slack end-to-end encrypted?

No. Slack encrypts messages while they travel between your device and its servers (TLS), and again when it stores them. Slack holds the keys, though, so its servers decrypt your messages to search, index and deliver them.

Enterprise Key Management (EKM) is an add-on for Enterprise Grid. The company keeps the keys in its own AWS Key Management Service account, and Slack asks for them each time it decrypts. Admins can revoke the keys for one channel, a time range or the whole organization, and Slack then cannot read that data. EKM is a kill switch for the company. It does not hide anything from the company, and messages are still decrypted on Slack's servers. Free, Pro and Business+ do not have it.

Huddles and calls are not end-to-end encrypted either. Work chat tools skip end-to-end encryption on purpose, because a company has to search, keep and export its own records:

The practical risk for most people is account takeover, not Slack itself. A stolen session cookie or token reads everything you can read, so turn on two-factor authentication; what those tokens are is in Slack xoxc and xoxd tokens. Keep private conversations on an end-to-end encrypted app on your own phone.

FAQ

Can my boss see my Slack messages?

Your manager sees what any coworker sees: public channels and conversations they are in. They cannot read your DMs unless they are a Workspace or Org Owner with export access, or they get the data from someone who has it.

Does Slack notify you when an admin exports your DMs?

Slack's help center does not describe a notice to members when an export runs. It says laws and policies may require employers to tell employees about export tools. Check your company's IT or acceptable use policy.

Can my boss hear my Slack huddles?

Not live, unless they are in the huddle. Messages and files shared in a huddle thread are stored like other messages and follow the same export rules.

Can my employer tell if I use a tool to stay active?

That is a separate question from reading DMs. What shows up in admin logs is in whether a presence tool can get you caught.
