To leave a Slack workspace or delete your Slack account, deactivate your account in that workspace. Open my.slack.com/account in a browser while signed in, scroll to Deactivate account, click Deactivate your account, enter your password, and confirm. It takes effect at once. A Slack account belongs to one workspace, so repeat this in every workspace you want to leave. Your messages and files are not deleted; delete them first if your workspace allows it.
Slack's web app has no "Leave workspace" button, and the desktop app runs the same client. We checked on 4 October 2026 in our own workspace: the workspace menu ends with Sign out, and the workspace switcher offers only Add a workspace. Signing out removes the workspace from that device and keeps you a member.
How to deactivate your Slack account
- On a computer, go to my.slack.com/account. In our test it forwarded to
your-workspace.slack.com/account/settings, the Settings tab of your account page. - Scroll down to Deactivate account and click Deactivate your account.
- Enter your password and select Confirm Password.
- Click Yes, deactivate my account.
- • You lose access at once. To return, a workspace owner or admin has to reactivate you. How that works is in can a deactivated Slack account be reactivated.
- • Your messages and files stay. Slack does not delete them. Whether deleted messages can still be read later is covered in can Slack see deleted messages. Delete the ones you want gone before you deactivate, if your workspace settings allow it.
- • Apps you installed may be disabled. A workspace owner can re-enable them.
- • Other workspaces are not affected. Deactivate each one separately.
- • Your profile stays until an owner removes it. The Primary Owner can delete your profile information after you deactivate, or ask Slack for help.
- • You are the Primary Owner. The button is not there. Our own account page, as Primary Owner, shows this instead: "You're the primary owner of Slack so you can't deactivate your account. You can transfer ownership to another member or delete the workspace." The two links go to
/admin/transferand to/admin/settings#delete_team. - • You are a guest, or in an Enterprise organization where membership in the workspace is required. The option does not appear; ask an owner or admin.
- • Your company manages accounts through single sign-on or provisioning. IT deactivates accounts, usually when you leave the company.
If you sign in through your company's single sign-on, IT may handle deactivation for you; see the limits below.

Sign out, leave, deactivate or delete
| Action | What happens | Who can do it |
|---|---|---|
| Sign out | You stay a member | You |
| Leave a channel | You stop getting that channel | You |
| Deactivate your account | No more access to that workspace; messages stay | You |
| Delete profile information | Name, photo and fields removed | Primary Owner |
| Delete the workspace | Everything deleted for everyone | Primary Owner only |
How to leave a Slack workspace: deactivate your account in it, as above. Signing out, the last item in the workspace menu, only removes it from that device. If you only want fewer channels, leave those instead, or tidy the sidebar; see Slack channels disappeared from the sidebar for how the sidebar filters work.
How to delete a whole Slack workspace
Only the workspace's Primary Owner can delete it, and it removes all messages and files for everyone. Export anything you need first. The setting is in the workspace admin settings; if you are not the Primary Owner, ask them.
