Slack Focus Mode: How It Works and What Others See
Slack focus mode is a desktop feature you turn on from the sidebar. It turns Slack grayscale, replaces numbered badges with dots, pauses notification sounds (VIPs optional) and sets your status to In focus mode for 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours or until you turn it off. How it differs from pausing notifications, and what it does not change.
On this page
Slack focus mode quiets Slack on your computer while you work. Click the moon button at the bottom of the left rail, just above your profile picture, to turn it on, and click it again to turn it off. While it is on, Slack turns grey, unread counts become small dots, channel names stop showing in bold, notifications pause, and an In focus mode status with a telescope emoji appears next to your name. You choose how long it lasts: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, a custom time, or until you turn it off.
We turned focus mode on and off in the Slack web app on 2 October, in our own Free workspace, and read the account through Slack's Web API at each step. Your presence does not change: Slack still showed the account as active, and you still go away 10 minutes after your last keyboard or mouse input on the computer.
What focus mode changed in our test
| What we checked | Focus mode off | Focus mode on |
|---|---|---|
| Sidebar theme | Purple workspace theme | Grey |
| Activity badge | Red number 5 | Small dot |
| Unread channels | Names in bold | Names in regular weight |
| Your name in the sidebar and messages | No emoji | Telescope emoji |
| Your avatar's label | Active | Active, notifications snoozed |
users.getPresence | active | active |
dnd.info snooze | false | false |
users.info status text and emoji | Empty | Empty |
The last two rows matter if you rely on tools that read Slack. Focus mode did not start a Do Not Disturb snooze, and it did not write a status to your profile. Slack keeps it in your own preferences: users.prefs.get showed focus_mode_expiration_ts, set to 9999999999 for "Don't turn off" and to 30 minutes from now (1,796 seconds when we read it) after we picked 30 minutes. An app or bot that reads your status through the API saw no focus status at all. We did not test what a coworker's Slack shows, because our test workspace has one person.
How to turn on focus mode in Slack
- Open Slack on your computer.
- Click the moon button at the bottom of the left rail, labelled Turn on focus mode. Slack turns grey at once.
- Hover over the same button to see the focus mode card, then pick a Duration: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, Don't turn off, or Custom.
- To end it early, click the button again (now labelled Exit focus mode).
- • Automatic statuses. "In focus mode for focus mode" adds the telescope status. Uncheck it to keep the quiet sidebar without telling anyone. If you already have a status set, Slack leaves yours in place.
- • Turn on focus mode when your calendar has a focus block. This needs a connected calendar; in our workspace, with no calendar connected, the box was greyed out.
- • VIPs. Under Preferences, Notifications, the box "Messages from VIPs, even if notifications are paused" lets your VIP list through. It was off by default in our account.
With a 30-minute duration the card read "Notifications paused until 4:45 PM", and the sidebar went back to normal when we clicked Exit focus mode. Slack's help center describes focus mode for the desktop app. On a phone, use Pause notifications instead.
Focus mode settings: status, VIPs and calendar
The gear on the focus mode card opens Preferences, Availability. Three settings decide how focus mode behaves:
Never appear "away" on Slack again
Cloud-based. No downloads. Works 24/7 even when your laptop is off.
Focus mode vs pause notifications vs a custom status
| Focus mode | Pause notifications (Do Not Disturb) | Custom status | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you see | Grey sidebar, dots instead of counts | No change | No change |
| Notifications | Paused, VIPs optional | Paused; a sender can override once a day | Unchanged |
| What others see | The In focus mode status, if that box is on | A Z icon next to your name | Your emoji and text |
| How long | 30 min, 1 h, 2 h, custom, or until you turn it off | Until the time you pick, or on a daily schedule | Until the clear-after time |
Shows in the API (dnd.info, users.info) | No, in our test | Yes, snooze_enabled | Yes, status_text |
| Changes your green dot | No | No | No |
Use focus mode for a block of deep work at your desk. Use pause notifications when you want nothing on any device, or quiet hours every evening; the measured pause timings are in Slack Do Not Disturb. Use a custom status when you want to say what you are doing and for how long; wording ideas are in Slack status examples, and focus blocks can be set ahead with the Slack status scheduler.
Focus mode and your green dot
Focus mode is not Away and not Offline. In our test the presence API returned active before, during and after focus mode. Your dot follows your input as always. The desktop app counts input in any app (Slack desktop 4.52.178 code, checked 7 Oct 2026), so focus work in another app keeps you green; a long read without touching anything does not. The rules are in how Slack decides when you're away.
FAQ
Where is focus mode in Slack? The moon button at the bottom of the left rail, above your profile picture. Hover over it for the duration menu and the gear for settings.
Can people see that I am in focus mode? Only through the automatic In focus mode status, which you can turn off under Preferences, Availability. Apps reading Slack's API saw no status and no snooze in our test.
Is focus mode the same as Do Not Disturb? No. In our test it did not start a Do Not Disturb snooze, and dnd.info stayed unchanged. Pause notifications stops notifications on every device and shows a Z by your name.
