Slack Status for Your Birthday: 30 Ideas and the Emoji to Use

A Slack status for your birthday is one short line with a birthday emoji, such as 🎂 "Birthday today, so my replies come with cake." Type :birthday: for 🎂 or :tada: for 🎉 in the status field, and leave Duration on Today, so it clears at the end of the day on its own. A Slack status holds up to 100 characters. Slack itself does not know or announce your birthday, so the status is how coworkers find out, if you want them to.

We set a birthday status in a test workspace on 29 September 2026 and checked every emoji code and the length limit below. The three birthday emoji we made for it are free to download.

How a birthday status looks in Slack

The status emoji sits next to your name on every message you post that day. Hovering over it shows the full line and when it clears; with Duration set to Today, Slack said "Until tomorrow".

What else the test showed:

• • 100 characters is the limit. A 100-character status saved. At 101 characters Slack's users.profile.set returned too_long. Every line on this page is well under it.
• • Two codes people guess do not exist. :birthday_cake: and :party_popper: returned invalid_name. Slack's names are :birthday: and :tada:.
• • Today is the default. A new status in the web app starts with Duration set to Today, so a birthday status clears itself unless you change it.

All three are 128 x 128 pixels. Add one from the emoji picker with Add Emoji, then pick it as your status emoji. In our test the solid :hbd: and :cake-day: stayed readable next to a name. The see-through :bday-party: changes colour and is lively as a reaction, but at status size it was hard to read; put it on a solid background in the Slack emoji maker if you want it as your status. The same tool makes a party emoji from your own photo or word.

All eight worked as reactions in our test. Type the code in the status field or the message field, or search "birthday" or "cake" in the emoji picker. :birthday: is the whole cake with candles and :cake: is a slice.

How to set a birthday status

Click your profile picture, then Update your status, or press Cmd+Shift+Y (Ctrl+Shift+Y).

Type your status and click the emoji button to pick one.

Leave Duration on Today.

If you take the day off, tick Pause notifications until status is cleared.

Click Save.

Does Slack tell people your birthday?

No. Slack profiles have no birthday field by default, and Slack does not send birthday reminders or posts. Coworkers know only if you tell them, or if your company set it up:

• A custom profile field. Admins on paid plans can add fields such as "Birthday" to profiles. It shows only if you fill it in.

• A birthday app. Apps from the Slack Marketplace post birthday messages in a channel, based on dates people enter.

• A workflow. A scheduled workflow in Workflow Builder can post a reminder on a date someone sets up.

Happy birthday GIFs and messages in Slack

To wish a coworker happy birthday, click the smiley face in the message field, choose GIFs, and search "happy birthday".
