Slack Emoji for OOO, PTO and Days Off
Use ๐ด :palm_tree: for OOO, โ๏ธ :airplane: for travel and ๐๏ธ for planned PTO. Slack has no :ooo: emoji, so download six free OOO, PTO and BACK MON emoji, tested in a real Slack status.
The usual Slack emoji for OOO is ๐ด :palm_tree:. Slack's own suggested "Vacationing" status uses it, so coworkers read it as "away" at a glance. For travel use โ๏ธ :airplane:, for planned PTO that is not a holiday use ๐๏ธ :spiral_calendar_pad:, and for a sick day ๐ค :face_with_thermometer:. On Enterprise plans, Slack's built-in Out of office status uses โ :no_entry:. Whatever the emoji, add the return date in the text and set the status to clear on that day.
Slack has no built-in :ooo: or :pto: emoji. When we tried to set either one as a status in a test workspace on 7 October 2026, Slack refused with profile_status_set_failed_not_valid_emoji. Below are six you can download and add, made with our free Slack emoji maker and tested in that workspace.

We set each of these 12 codes as a status on 7 October 2026, and Slack accepted all of them. For the reason you are away, the emoji can say more than the text. ๐๏ธ keeps it private; ๐ด says holiday.

Each file is 128 x 128 pixels and between 3 KB and 23 KB, far under Slack's 128 KB limit. Orange is for away, blue and purple for planned time off, green for the day you are back.

Save a file, then in Slack open the emoji picker, click Add Emoji at the bottom, upload it and type the name. The upload steps and who may add emoji are in how to add custom emoji to Slack. To change the word or the colour, open the emoji maker, pick Text to emoji, and type your own, such as BACK TUE. Many more ready-made emoji are in Slack emoji packs.
How the OOO emoji looks in a real Slack status
We added all six to our test workspace and set the status "OOO until Mon 13 Oct. Urgent: Alex" with :ooo: and a 15-minute clear time. The profile showed the orange OOO square next to the text, and the presence line above it still read Active with a green dot.
Afterwards we cleared the status and removed the six emoji from the workspace.
Never appear "away" on Slack again

Set an OOO emoji that clears itself
- Click your profile picture, then Update your status, or press Cmd+Shift+Y (Ctrl+Shift+Y on Windows).
- Pick the emoji and type the status with your return date.
- Under Remove status after, choose your return date. To set it ahead of time, choose Choose a start and end time in the duration menu; the steps are in how to schedule a Slack status.
- Check Pause notifications if you do not want alerts while away.
- Click Save.
On Enterprise plans you can use Slack's out of office feature, which also sends automatic replies; on other plans the status is what people see. Both are in Slack out of office message. For sick days, see Slack status for sick days.
The emoji does not change your dot
An OOO status tells people you are away, but your presence dot still follows activity: green while you use the computer with Slack open, away after 10 minutes without keyboard or mouse input. Our screenshot above shows both at once: the OOO status and Active.
