Does Discord Notify When You Change Your Status?

Switching between Online, Idle and Do Not Disturb sends no notification. But friends on the Discord mobile app can get a push when you come online, set a new custom status, or start a game, and you cannot stop Discord from sending it. They can turn it off on their side; you can go Invisible.

Switching your Discord status to Idle or Do Not Disturb does not send anyone a notification. Switching back to Online can count as coming online: Discord's client reports you after 5 minutes Online if it has not done so in the last hour. Three changes can notify friends: when you come online, when you set or change a custom status, and when you start a game Discord detects, your friends may get a push notification on the Discord mobile app, such as "[username] updated their status". Friends turn these off on their side. On your side, Discord's web client, which we read on 7 October 2026, now carries two settings, notifyFriendsOnComeOnline and notifyFriendsOnProfileUpdate, both on by default (code and output below). A Discord staff member said on Reddit in November 2025 that "broadcasting isn't configurable at the moment", and we could not check where the new settings show up in the app without an account. Invisible and Do Not Disturb avoid the online alert for certain: the code reports you as online only while your status is Online or Streaming.

What each Discord dot means is in Discord status icons meaning.

Which status changes notify your friends

The toggle names come from Discord's help article "[Mobile] Notifications Settings 101", updated in September 2026. A guide from roboin.io in April 2026 called the custom-status toggle Status notifications, so the label depends on the app version. These alerts are push notifications on the mobile app; Discord's desktop app has no matching setting. Only friends get them, not everyone in a shared server.

The pushes started rolling out in late 2025. PiunikaWeb reported in November 2025 that Discord began sending alerts when friends come online or change their status, and that users could turn off receiving them but not sending them.

What Discord's code does when you come online

The "is online" push starts in your own Discord client. We downloaded the web client from discord.com on 7 October 2026 and printed the part that reports you to Discord's servers:

#!/usr/bin/env python3
# Download Discord's web client and print the code that announces you to friends.
import re, urllib.request
UA = {"User-Agent": "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh) Chrome/140.0"}
def get(u): return urllib.request.urlopen(urllib.request.Request(u, headers=UA), timeout=60).read().decode()
html = get("https://discord.com/login")
js = next(get("https://discord.com" + a) for a in re.findall(r'src="(/assets/web\.[^"]+\.js)"', html))
i = js.index('persistKey="FriendOnlineTimerStore"')
block = js[i - 400:i + 1700]
print("cooldown:", re.search(r"let u=\w+\.A\.Millis\.(\w+)", block).group(1))
print("wait before report:", re.search(r"let p=(\d+\*\w+\.A\.Millis\.\w+)", block).group(1))
print("statuses that count:", re.search(r"return\[(\w+\.\w+\.\w+,\w+\.\w+\.\w+)\]\.includes", block).group(1))
print("report url:", re.search(r'USER_MEANINGFULLY_ONLINE:"([^"]+)"', js).group(1))
for name in ["notifyFriendsOnComeOnline", "notifyFriendsOnProfileUpdate"]:
    print("setting:", re.search(r'I\("notifications","' + name + r'",e=>e\?\.value\?\?(!\d)', js).group(0))

Output:

cooldown: HOUR
wait before report: 5*o.A.Millis.MINUTE
statuses that count: I.cl.ONLINE,I.cl.STREAMING
report url: /users/@me/meaningfully-online
setting: I("notifications","notifyFriendsOnComeOnline",e=>e?.value??!0
setting: I("notifications","notifyFriendsOnProfileUpdate",e=>e?.value??!0

Read together, the code does this:

  • • It waits 5 minutes. After you connect, or change your status, the client starts a 5-minute timer. If your status is still Online or Streaming when it ends, it posts to /users/@me/meaningfully-online. That report is what lets Discord tell friends you came online.
  • • Idle, Do Not Disturb and Invisible never trigger it. Only ONLINE and STREAMING pass the check, before the timer and again when it fires. Opening Discord for a minute and closing it sends nothing either.
  • • Once an hour at most. After one report, the client waits an hour before it can send another.
  • • The sender setting is checked first. The timer starts only if notifyFriendsOnComeOnline is on, and it is on unless you turn it off. A second setting, notifyFriendsOnProfileUpdate, also defaults to on and covers profile and custom status updates by its name; its code is not in the part of the client that loads before sign-in, so we did not see how it is used.
  • How to turn off Discord status notifications

    To stop getting "updated their status" and "is online" pings on your phone:

  • Tap your profile icon at the bottom of the Discord app, then the Settings cog on your profile card.
  • Under App Settings, tap Notifications.
  • Turn off Friends Online Status Notifications, Profile Updates, Friend Gaming Activity and Voice Activity Notifications, whichever you do not want.
  • You can also reach the same screen from the Notifications page: tap the bell, then the three dots, then Notification Settings. Discord notes that you get no push at all while the app is open and in focus.

    How to change your status without notifying friends

    If your app shows no setting to stop announcing you, avoid the triggers:

  • • Go Invisible first. You appear offline, so coming online sends nothing, and your custom status is hidden while you are Invisible. Your friends lose the ability to see you are around, too. What still shows is in Discord invisible vs offline.
  • • Switch to Idle or Do Not Disturb before you come online. The online report needs Online or Streaming, so these send nothing. Switching to Online later starts the 5-minute timer then.
  • • Stop sharing your game. In User Settings, Activity Privacy, turn off sharing your detected activity. You can also turn it off per server under the server's Privacy Settings.
  • • Leave the custom status alone. Each new custom status can ping friends who have the toggle on. Set one with a long Clear After instead of changing it several times a day. How to set it is in how to set a custom status on Discord.

If you want a status that says more without changing it often, the status message generator writes short lines by situation. It is built for Slack, and the lines fit Discord's 128-character custom status.

Do people see your status change without a notification?

Yes. Anyone who shares a server with you sees your dot and custom status in the member list and on your profile as soon as it changes. In a DM or group chat the custom status shows under your name. Discord does not keep a public history of past statuses, so a friend who was not looking only sees the current one.

If the change does not show for them at all, their app may be out of date or the change did not save; fixes are in Discord status won't change.

Slack and Teams do not ping on status changes

AppNotifies others when you change status?
DiscordFriends on mobile can get a push for coming online, a custom status, or a game
SlackNo. Your status and dot update quietly
Microsoft TeamsOnly if someone asked to be notified when you become available

In Slack, nobody is told when you set a status or when your dot turns green. The dot follows your Slack activity; see Slack away status meaning.
