Does Slack Notify Screenshots? No, and What It Can Log Instead

No. Slack does not notify anyone when you take a screenshot of a message, DM or channel, on Mac, Windows, the browser, iPhone or Android. It also sends no alert when you copy message text or save an image someone posted.

We checked this in Slack's own code on 3 October 2026. The Mac desktop app (Slack 4.52.171) has no screenshot detection: every place the word "screenshot" appears in it belongs to the crash-report form. The web client Slack loaded to open a DM had no match at all. Two exceptions are worth knowing: some Enterprise orgs block screenshots on Android, and Enterprise audit logs record file downloads.

What we found in Slack's code

A screenshot on a computer is taken by macOS or Windows. Neither system has a public way to tell an app that the screen was captured, so an app would have to watch for the key press itself. We searched both parts of Slack for any sign of that.

The desktop app's code ships in one file, app.asar. On our Mac:

Same 50 matches, and no screenshot key or screenshot event anywhere in the app's code.

Most of what you see in the desktop app is Slack's web client, which the app downloads from Slack's servers. We opened a DM in that client and fetched the 14 JavaScript files it loaded, 10.6 MB in total. A search for screenshot, PrintScreen (the Windows screenshot key) and userDidTakeScreenshot (the iPhone screenshot event) found 0 matches.

Phones are different. iOS and Android 14 or later can tell an app that a screenshot was taken, which is how Snapchat warns the sender. Slack's phone apps show no such alert, and Slack documents none. The only phone screenshot setting Slack has is the Android block below.

What Slack tells anyone, action by action

Slack's Audit Logs API lists file_downloaded as "a file was downloaded or viewed within Slack". It fires on a view as well as a download, so it cannot tell a saved image from a glance. Audit logs exist only on Enterprise plans, and only owners and admins can read them. They are not sent to the person who posted the file.

Does Slack notify screenshots on iPhone or Android?

No, on both. The phone apps send no alert.

One setting changes what you can do on Android. In an Enterprise org, owners can require a mobile passcode. Slack's help page for that setting says: "Members and guests won't be able to take screenshots on Android devices while viewing any workspaces in your Enterprise org. The ability to prevent screenshots on iOS devices isn't supported at this time."

So on a locked-down Enterprise org, Android blocks the screenshot and nobody is told that you tried, while on an iPhone the screenshot works as normal. On Free, Pro and Business+ plans this setting does not exist, and screenshots work on every device.

Where a screenshot can still be seen

Slack does not report screenshots. Other tools can still see what is on your screen:

• • Monitoring software on a work laptop. Some employers install tools that take periodic screenshots of the whole screen. That runs outside Slack. What Slack itself records is in can Slack be used to monitor employees.
• • Your own screen share. In a huddle or a video call, everyone watching sees what you show. What Slack keeps from a huddle is in are Slack huddles recorded.
• • The other side. Anyone can screenshot what you post, and you will not know. Treat any Slack message as something that can be copied.

Admins do not see screenshots, but on paid plans they can export messages under set conditions, and Enterprise orgs can keep and search all messages. The rules per plan are in can Slack admins see your DMs.

Does Slack notify when you screenshot a DM?

No. DMs, group DMs, private channels and public channels all work the same way. Nobody gets an alert.

Does Slack notify if you save an image?

No. The person who posted it is not told. On Enterprise plans, the audit log records a file_downloaded event, which admins can read.

Does Slack show when someone reads my message?
