Google Chat has four status icons. A solid green circle means Active: Gmail or Google Chat is open and in use. An orange circle with a clock means Idle: no activity in Gmail or Chat for 5 minutes, shown on desktop only. A hollow grey ring means Away: idle for more than 10 minutes, offline, or set to away by hand. A red circle with a white bar means Do not disturb: the person muted Chat notifications.

The screenshots below are from our own Google Chat account on 30 September 2026, in the web app at chat.google.com.

The icons in Google Chat's own status menu

Click the status button at the top right of Chat or Gmail and you get this menu. It shows three of the four icons next to the setting that produces them.

Google Chat's status menu: a green circle next to Automatic, Based on chat activity; a red circle with a white bar next to Do not disturb, Mute chat notifications; a hollow ring next to Set as away; then Add a status and Chat notification settings. Next to it, the Do not disturb list: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, Until a specific time, and Set a do not disturb schedule

Orange circle with a clockIdleNo activity in Gmail or Chat for 5 minutes. Desktop only. Chat sets it for you; it is not in the menu
Hollow grey ringAwayIdle more than 10 minutes, not connected, or Set as away

Work and school accounts can also show calendar text such as "In a meeting" or "Out of office" next to a name. Our test account was a personal Gmail account, and its menu had no calendar option.

What the status button shows for each setting

The button itself changes with your choice. With Do not disturb on, it drops the word and shows the end time next to the red icon.

The Google Chat status button three times: a green circle and Active for Automatic; a red circle and Until 10:09 PM after choosing Do not disturb for 30 minutes; a hollow ring and Away after choosing Set as away

What else we saw in the test:

  • • Do not disturb always has an end. The choices are 30 minutes, 1, 2, 4, 8 or 24 hours, a specific time, or a repeating schedule. There is no "until I turn it off".
  • • Set as away ended Do not disturb. We turned on Do not disturb for 30 minutes, then chose Set as away. The menu showed only Set as away as selected, and Do not disturb lost its end time. The three settings are one choice, so you cannot be away and muted at the same time.
  • • Your own button does not show Idle. We left the Chat tab with no input for 12 minutes. The button still showed a green circle and "Active" the whole time. It shows the setting you chose, so you cannot use it to check whether others see you as idle.
  • Custom statuses

Add a status opens a box with a 64-character counter and four suggestions, each with its own end time: Be right back (30 minutes), Commuting (1 hour), Out sick (Today) and Vacationing (This week).

Google Chat's Your status box: a Write your own field with a 0/64 counter, and suggestions Be right back 30 minutes, Commuting 1 hour, Out sick Today, Vacationing This week

Status lines you can copy are in how to set your status in Google Chat.

What does orange mean in Google Chat?

Orange with a clock is Idle. The person has Gmail or Chat open on a computer, but has not used either for 5 minutes. If they stay inactive, it turns into the grey Away ring at 10 minutes. Any click or keystroke in Gmail or Chat turns it green again. The timing is covered in how long before Google Chat shows Away.

What does the hollow grey ring mean?

Away. It appears in three cases: the person has been idle for more than 10 minutes, they are not connected to the internet, or they chose Set as away. The ring looks the same in all three, so you cannot tell which one it is.

Google Chat has no invisible mode. Set as away is the closest option, and how to use it is in how to appear offline on Google Chat.

How Google Chat decides you are active

Google Chat's status is based on activity in Gmail and Chat. Using Gmail counts, not only Chat. Activity in other apps does not count.

  • Active while you use Gmail or Chat.
  • Idle after 5 minutes without activity there, on desktop.
  • Away after 10 minutes, or at once if you lose the connection or choose Set as away.

To stay green, you need activity in Gmail or Chat. The options are in how to keep Google Chat active.

Who can see your Google Chat status?

People you share a space or a direct message with. People you have blocked do not see it. On work accounts, Do not disturb is shown only inside your organization.

Slack's dots follow different rules; they are decoded in Slack status icons meaning.
