Slack Huddle Not Working? Fixes for No Sound, Mic, Camera and Connection

Most Slack huddle failures are microphone or camera permission. We reproduced the Microphone permission denied and Unknown Device errors, ran Slack's own test, and list the fix for each symptom.

When a Slack huddle is not working, open Slack's own check first: click your profile picture, Preferences, Audio & video, and under Troubleshooting click Run test. It tests your microphone, speaker, camera, screen sharing and the network, one row at a time. In most cases the fix is permission: Slack, or the browser you run it in, has lost access to the microphone or camera. Give it back, pick the right devices in the same panel, and restart Slack. If the huddle works on your phone's mobile data but not on office Wi-Fi or a VPN, the network blocks huddle traffic and IT has to open it.

If a whole team hits the problem at once, check Slack's status page before anything else.

What Slack shows when it has no microphone access

We reproduced the most common failure on 2 October 2026: Slack's web app in a browser that had never been given microphone or camera permission. The Audio & video panel says so at the top, and every device menu reads Unknown Device:

Slack Preferences, Audio & video, with a yellow Microphone permission denied banner, an empty camera preview and Unknown Device in the camera and microphone menus

We then clicked Run test. The results came in this order:

Test rowResult in our runWhat it means
MicrophoneFail, at onceNo microphone permission
SpeakerAsks "Can you hear this?"; Fail after we answered NoThe test waits for your answer
CameraPassSlack found a camera entry
Camera resolutionSpinner for more than 3 minutesSlack could not open the camera
Audio, video, screen sharing, UDP and TCP connectivityPending, never ranThe test stops behind the camera step
Slack Run test results: Microphone Fail, Speaker Fail, Camera Pass, Camera resolution still loading, and the connectivity rows Pending

Two lessons for your own run. A Fail on Microphone or Speaker usually means permission or the wrong device, not a broken headset. And if the test stalls at Camera resolution, the network rows never run, so a stalled test tells you nothing about your firewall. Fix camera access first, or test the network from the phone as described below. In an earlier test in the same browser, a huddle we started on our own never connected and Slack showed "Can't join the huddle" within about 2 minutes, both times we tried.

Blur and background pictures need a working camera image first; the options are in Slack huddle background. During a huddle on desktop, the troubleshooting icon in the bottom left opens a panel for each part, with the Audio-only mode switch.

Slack huddle: others cannot hear you

  • Check you are not muted. The mic shortcut is Cmd+Shift+Space on a Mac and Ctrl+Shift+Space on Windows, and it is easy to hit by accident.
  • Pick the right microphone. In Preferences, Audio & video, say a few words and watch the Input level dots. If they do not move, choose another device from the Microphone menu. If the menu says Unknown Device, Slack has no permission to list your devices; go to step 3.
  • Give Slack microphone access again.
  • - Mac: System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone, turn Slack on. If it is already on, turn it off and on. - Windows: Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone, allow apps to use the microphone and turn on Slack. - Chrome: Settings, Privacy and security, Site settings, Microphone, and add your workspace URL to Allow.
  • Close other calling apps. Slack's help center notes that switching between Slack and another calling app can revoke Slack's microphone access. Re-grant it as in step 3.
  • Slack huddle: you cannot hear anyone

  • In Preferences, Audio & video, check the speaker and click Test. You should hear a chime. Inside a huddle, the three dots menu has Test Speaker too.
  • On Windows, Slack can fail to find a headset that is not the system default. Open Settings, System, Sound and choose your headset as the output device.
  • Quit and reopen Slack, then restart the computer if it is still silent. Update your audio drivers on Windows.
  • Slack huddle keeps disconnecting or will not connect

Slack's bandwidth figures: a voice huddle needs 200 kbps down and 100 kbps up. Video needs 600 kbps each way for two people, 1.2 Mbps down for three, and 2 Mbps down for five or more. Screen sharing needs the same as video. If you are below that, switch on Audio-only mode, move closer to the router or plug in a cable.

To find where the block is, try the huddle in three places, in this order, as Slack's troubleshooting article suggests:

  • Update the desktop app, then try again.
  • Slack in Google Chrome. If Chrome works and the app does not, reinstall the app.
  • The Slack phone app on the same Wi-Fi, then on mobile data. If it works on mobile data but not on Wi-Fi, the network blocks huddles. If it fails on the computer but works on the same Wi-Fi from the phone, look at antivirus or security software on the computer.
  • For IT teams, Slack's network guide for huddles lists what to allow:

Domains: *.chime.aws (or IP range 99.77.128.0/18)
UDP: 3478 (preferred) or 22466 (legacy)
    TCP: 443

It also asks for huddle traffic to bypass VPNs and proxies, with split tunneling on the VPN, and for deep packet inspection to be off for these paths. A corporate VPN is the most common reason a huddle works at home and fails at work.

Cloud-based. No downloads. Works 24/7 even when your laptop is off.

Slack huddle camera not working

  • • Plug an external camera in before you join. Slack's help center says video will not show if you plug it in after the huddle starts.
  • • In Preferences, Audio & video, pick the camera. You should see yourself in the preview.
  • • Re-grant camera access: Privacy & Security, Camera on a Mac, Privacy & security, Camera on Windows, or Site settings, Camera in Chrome.
  • • Close other apps that hold the camera, such as Zoom or Teams.
  • • If the computer slows down in a big video huddle, turn off your video or noise suppression.
  • Slack huddle screen sharing not working on Mac

Slack needs Screen & System Audio Recording permission (Screen Recording on older macOS). If Slack shows an error even though the permission looks on, Slack's help center describes a known bug for people who moved from the direct download to the Mac App Store version. The fix is to remove the permission and grant it again. Remove Slack from the list in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Screen & System Audio Recording, or reset it from Terminal:

    tccutil reset ScreenCapture com.tinyspeck.slackmacgap

com.tinyspeck.slackmacgap is the Slack desktop app's bundle ID. We checked it on Slack 4.52.162 for macOS 26.5.2 before using it; if your copy differs, read yours first:

    mdls -name kMDItemCFBundleIdentifier /Applications/Slack.app
    # kMDItemCFBundleIdentifier = "com.tinyspeck.slackmacgap"

Quit and reopen Slack, start a screen share, and allow access when macOS asks. On Windows, if others cannot see your shared screen, open the laptop lid and unplug extra monitors, then share again.

Share audio in a Slack huddle

To let people hear a video or a demo, share your screen with sound. Slack's help article "Use huddles in Slack" gives the steps:

  • In the huddle, click the share screen icon.
  • Select a screen, window or application.
  • Check Share system audio.
  • Click Share.
  • WhereShare computer audio?How
Slack desktop app, WindowsYesShare system audio in the share dialog
Slack desktop app, MacYes, after you allow itScreen & System Audio Recording permission, as in the section above
Slack in ChromeTab audio anywhere; whole-screen audio on Windows onlyChrome's own picker: Also share tab audio or Also share system audio
Slack on iPhone or AndroidSlack's help lists no audio optionShare from a computer

If people see your screen but hear nothing, the box was not checked (stop sharing and start again with it checked), the sound plays on another device such as a Bluetooth speaker paired to your phone, or the Mac permission is missing. If they hear an echo, your microphone is picking up your speakers. Wear headphones, or mute with Cmd+Shift+Space on a Mac or Ctrl+Shift+Space on Windows while the clip plays. The huddle menu also has Play music, which plays Slack's own background music, not your files.

Huddle not working on iPhone or Android

  • • Update the Slack app.
  • • Give Slack microphone and camera access in the phone's settings: Settings, Slack on iPhone, or Apps, Slack, Permissions on Android.
  • • Clear Slack's cache: profile picture, Preferences, Debug & Reset Cache (iPhone) or Reset Cache (Android). More in how to clear Slack cache.
  • • Turn off battery saver, which can throttle calls in the background.
  • Still not working?

Contact Slack support and include the Run test results, the time of the huddle that failed, and a screenshot of any error. Slack asks for these three things.

    FAQ

Why does Slack say Unknown Device for my microphone?

Slack cannot list devices it has no permission to use. In our test the camera, microphone and speaker menus all read Unknown Device while the browser had no permission. Allow the microphone for Slack in your system settings, or for the Slack site in your browser, then reopen the panel.

Does a huddle work in the browser?

Slack's own troubleshooting steps include trying Chrome, and the web app has the same Audio & video panel and Run test button; we ran ours there. If the Slack site has no microphone permission in the browser, the panel shows Microphone permission denied until you allow it in the site settings.

    Are Slack huddles recorded?

No. See are Slack huddles recorded, and how to record a Slack huddle if you need a transcript. For team calls, Slack huddles vs Zoom compares the two.
