Slack Status for a Conference, Travel or Training: 30 to Copy

A Slack status for a conference needs three facts: where you are, when you read Slack, and when you are back. For example: 📛 "At a conference until Thu. Replies in the evening." The same shape works for a trip (✈️ "Flying to Berlin, online again at 4 PM CET") and for training (📚 "In training until 3, back after"). Set it before you leave with Choose a start and end time, so Slack turns it on and clears it for you.

The best statuses name a time zone, because "back at 3" means a different hour to every reader. To say a time that everyone sees in their own zone, use a Slack date token from our Slack timestamp generator in a message, or check the gap first with the Slack time zone converter.

Slack status emoji for conferences and travel

How to set a conference status before you leave

• Click your profile picture in the sidebar, then Update your status.
• Paste a status and pick an emoji.
• Open the Duration menu (or Remove status after) and choose Choose a start and end time.
• Pick the first and last day of the event, then click Save.

Two settings to check before a trip:

• • Time zone. In Preferences, Language & region, Set time zone automatically makes Slack follow your laptop. Coworkers then see your local time on your profile. See how to change time zone in Slack.

What a travel status should say

Keep it to plans people can act on. "At a conference until Thu" tells a coworker to wait or to ask someone else. Leave out the hotel name, flight number and exact location; your status is visible to everyone in the workspace and, depending on settings, to people in shared channels from other companies. Set a trip status with the Slack API

If you travel often, a script can set the status with an end time in the event's time zone. It uses users.profile.set with a user token that has the users.profile:write scope. Without --send it only prints the payload:

Run without --send, it prints "status_expiration": 1790902800, the Unix time for 6 PM Pacific on 1 October. Slack's docs say status_text takes up to 100 characters and a status_expiration of 0 means the status never clears.
