How to Appear Active on Slack When You Step Away

You're in a call, reading a doc, or grabbing lunch and Slack flips you to away. Here's how to appear active on Slack in the situations where the dot turns yellow at the worst time.

Slack decides you're active only while you touch the app — typing, clicking, or scrolling inside Slack itself. Everything else you do at your desk counts for nothing. So the moment you switch to a call, a document, or a code editor, the 10-minute idle timer starts, and a few minutes later you look away.

This guide isn't another list of tools. It's about the specific moments when the yellow dot shows up at the worst time, and what actually keeps you looking present in each one.

Why "set yourself as active" doesn't hold

Slack's own help page lets you force your availability to "Active." People assume that pins you green. It doesn't. It flips the dot once, and the idle clock keeps running underneath. Ten minutes without input in the app and you're away again, availability setting or not.

If you want the full breakdown of how the detection works, we took it apart in how Slack decides when you're away. The short version: only in-app activity resets the timer.

The situations that catch people out

SituationWhy you go awayWhat keeps you active
Long video callCall app isn't SlackSlack huddle, or server-side presence
Reading docs / researchNo input in SlackOccasional Slack interaction, or a scheduler
Coding / design deep workFocus app isn't SlackServer-side tool with work hours
Short break (coffee, lunch)Screen locks, no inputSecond device, or "keep online for X"

In a meeting

You're on Zoom or Google Meet for an hour, fully working, and Slack shows you away the whole time. If the meeting is inside Slack, a huddle keeps you green for its full length. If it's on another platform, nothing you do in that window touches Slack, so the dot drops. The honest fixes are either a quick Slack interaction every few minutes or a tool that refreshes presence for you.

Deep work off-screen

Reading a 40-page spec or thinking through a problem is real work that produces zero Slack input. This is where people reach for mouse jigglers — but a jiggler only helps if the cursor sits over the Slack window, otherwise it's keeping your email client awake instead. For stretches of focus time, a scheduled server-side tool matches your status to your working hours rather than your mouse.

Stepping away for a few minutes

Coffee, a bathroom break, walking the dog for ten minutes. Your laptop locks, input stops, you go away. A phone with Slack open and the screen forced on buys you some time, though iOS likes to suspend the app — more on that in keeping Slack active on mobile.

What I wouldn't do

Больше никогда не показывать "отошёл" в Slack

Облачное решение. Без загрузок. Работает 24/7 даже при выключенном ноутбуке.

Don't sit in a solo huddle for three hours. It works — a huddle counts as active — but a teammate will eventually notice you've been "in a call" alone since 9 a.m., and that's a worse look than a yellow dot.

Don't lean on free software jigglers on a managed work laptop. Corporate device monitoring flags them first, and getting flagged for spoofing is a bigger problem than appearing away. If you're worried about that side of things, read will I get caught before you install anything.

The lower-effort option

If the yellow dot keeps showing up during hours you're genuinely working, the least fiddly fix is a server-side presence tool like Slack Green. It authenticates as your Slack session and refreshes presence from a server on a schedule you set, so you stay active during your work hours and go away on your own terms — no app open, no cursor tricks, no laptop that has to stay awake. The trade-off is trusting a third party with a session token, which is worth understanding before you commit.

None of this changes the underlying rule: Slack only counts activity inside Slack. Pick the fix that matches the situation you actually keep getting caught in, and stop fighting the timer everywhere at once.
