Slack Pro: Price, What It Adds Over Free, and Is It Worth It

Slack Pro is Slack's first paid plan. It costs $7.25 per user a month paid yearly, or $8.75 paid monthly, and Slack bills only members who were active in the last 28 days. Over Free it adds full message history, group huddles, shared channels with other companies, unlimited apps, canvases, lists and workflows. It is worth it if your team needs any of those. It is not worth it for a small team that chats every day, never searches old messages and holds group calls in another tool.

We opened the plan page inside our own Free workspace on 2 October to check what Slack offers today, instead of copying a pricing summary, and opened it again on 5 October: the prices and the comparison rows had not changed, and slack.com/pricing/pro still read "$8.75 USD per active user per month, billed monthly". This is what the plan page showed:

These rows come from the "Compare all features" table on that page. We kept the rows where Free and Pro differ.

Two rows surprise people. Sidebar sections are a paid feature now ("Customizable sections: Not included" on Free), and Free has no access logs, so on Free you cannot see the sign-in history that does Slack show when you are on mobile uses. Guests are paid too: the invite dialog in our Free workspace had no guest option, as shown in Slack Connect vs guest accounts.

History is still the feature most teams upgrade for. On Free, anything older than 90 days is hidden, and the table caps data retention at 1 year. Our Free workspace's own usage page is in Slack free plan limits.

What Slack Pro costs for your team

The monthly price comes from slack.com/pricing/pro, which read "$8.75 USD per active user per month, billed monthly" on 2 October. Members who take no action in Slack for 28 days are not billed, and Slack credits time already paid for them. Qualified nonprofits and schools get discounts.

Why is Slack Pro so expensive?

Compared with Microsoft Teams, it is. Teams Essentials is $4 a user a month, and Teams comes with Microsoft 365 Business Basic, which also includes email. Slack sells chat, calls and apps only, so a company already paying for Microsoft 365 pays twice. The comparison is in Slack vs Teams. Slack Pro vs Business+

Business+ costs about twice as much ($15 vs $7.25 per person a month, yearly). In the table it adds three groups:

For a team without an SSO or export requirement, Pro covers the features most teams miss on Free.

When Slack Pro is worth it, and when it is not

Worth it if you search decisions, files or customer threads older than 90 days, hold group calls in Slack, work with clients in shared channels, or want workflows, canvases or sidebar sections.

Not worth it for a few people who treat Slack as disposable chat, for a company where most people already use Teams, or if all you want is for Slack to show you as active; presence works the same on Free, as covered in how to keep Slack active.
