Slack stays active for 10 minutes after your last input inside the Slack app on desktop. Typing, clicking, or scrolling in Slack resets the timer. Input in other apps does not. On your phone, there is no timer at all: you are active only while the Slack app is open on screen, and you flip to away seconds after you switch apps or lock the phone. If your computer goes to sleep, you go away almost immediately - the 10-minute timer never gets to run.
That is the whole answer for most people, and the rest of this guide is the fine print: what counts as input, how iPhone and Android differ, which device wins when you are signed in on several, and how long the other kind of status - the text next to your name - sticks around. It matters because teammates and some managers read the green dot as "at work", even though the dot measures input, not work. That gap is why Slack Green exists - a cloud service that keeps your Slack presence active on the schedule you set, with no software on your machine. First, the exact timers.
How long does Slack stay active on each device?
| Where Slack runs | Stays active for | What flips you to away |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop app (Mac/Windows/Linux) | 10 minutes after your last input in Slack | No input inside Slack for 10 minutes |
| Browser tab (slack.com) | 10 minutes after your last input in the tab | Same 10-minute idle timer |
| Computer asleep or locked | Seconds | Sleep, screen lock, or lid close - immediate |
| Phone app, on screen | While the app is in the foreground | Switching apps or locking the screen |
| Phone app, backgrounded | Seconds | Happens on its own, almost instantly |
| Manual "Set yourself as away" | Until you switch back | You, not a timer |
Two details people miss. The timer resets only on input inside the Slack client itself: a focused Slack window, typing, clicking, scrolling. Writing a doc in another app does not keep you green, because Slack cannot see input outside its own window. And there is no setting, on any plan, that makes the 10 minutes longer or shorter.
How long does Slack stay active on desktop?
Ten minutes, measured from your last mouse movement, click, or keystroke while the Slack desktop app or browser tab is running. Type an email, scroll a spreadsheet, nudge the mouse - each one restarts the countdown, because Slack checks whether your computer is in use, not whether you are inside Slack.
The timer only runs while your machine is awake. The most common "why did I go away after 2 minutes?" case is not the timer at all: your Mac or Windows power settings put the display to sleep or locked the screen, and Slack marked you away right then. That trap and its fixes are covered step by step in our guide to keeping Slack active on desktop, and the flip-side question - why the timeout feels so short - in why Slack goes idle so quickly.
How long does Slack stay active on your phone?
Never appear "away" on Slack again
Cloud-based. No downloads. Works 24/7 even when your laptop is off.
There is no 10-minute grace period on mobile. The Slack app reports you active only while it is open and on screen. The moment you switch to another app, return to the home screen, or lock the phone, iOS and Android suspend Slack's background activity and your green dot drops within seconds.
This surprises people because notifications still arrive. Push notifications are delivered through Apple's and Google's push services, which work while the app is suspended - so your phone buzzing has nothing to do with your dot being green. On iPhone and Android alike, the rule is the same: screen on + Slack in front = active. Anything else = away.
So if you answer from a phone all day, you look offline all day between replies. Our mobile guide covers what actually works from a phone, including the screen-on workaround and its battery cost.
Does using your phone keep Slack active?
No - using your phone does not keep Slack active. Using the Slack app does. Reading email, browsing, or sitting in another app does nothing for your dot, because Slack only reports activity while it is the foreground app.
The same logic answers "does closing my laptop but keeping my phone in my pocket keep me green?" - it does not. A pocketed phone is a locked phone, and a locked phone reports away.
Which device decides your dot when you're signed in everywhere?
Slack shows you as active if any signed-in device is currently reporting activity. It is an OR, not a hierarchy: a laptop inside its 10-minute window keeps you green even if your phone has been locked for hours, and an open phone app keeps you green after your desktop went idle.
When the last active device stops reporting - the laptop timer expires, the phone gets locked - the dot flips to away for everyone. The full detection logic, including what Slack does and does not track, is in how Slack decides when you're away.
How long does your Slack status stay active?
Never appear "away" on Slack again
Cloud-based. No downloads. Works 24/7 even when your laptop is off.
If you mean the status text - the emoji and message like "In a meeting" - that is a different timer entirely, and it is the one timer Slack lets you control. When you set a status you pick a duration: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, today, this week, or "don't clear". The status stays exactly that long, whether you are at your desk or asleep.
The two timers never interact. You can be "On vacation" with a green dot (your laptop is awake at home) or have no status and show away (you stepped out for 11 minutes). The green dot is presence; the text is a label. If you want the label to follow your calendar or working hours, see how to schedule a Slack status.
Can you change how long Slack stays active?
No. There is no user preference and no admin setting for the idle timeout - not on free plans, not on Enterprise. Workspace owners cannot extend the 10 minutes, and Slack has said the timeout is fixed. The only presence controls you get are blunt: Set yourself as away (grey dot until you undo it) and pause notifications (adds a Z to your dot but does not change active/away). What the dot and that Z actually signal is broken down in Slack active status explained.
So "stay active longer" always means changing what Slack sees, not changing the timer:
- • Keep the machine awake and fed with input. Power settings set to never sleep, plus something that generates input - a mouse jiggler, or you actually working. Breaks the moment you step away; jigglers also have to run on the machine your IT department may monitor.
- • Keep the Slack app on screen on a spare device. Works, but burns a phone screen all day.
- • Run it in the cloud. Slack Green signs into Slack's servers on your behalf and keeps your presence active on the working-hours schedule you choose - laptop closed, phone in your pocket. Nothing to install, and it stops exactly when your schedule says so.
The honest comparison of all of these, including failure modes, is in every method to keep Slack active.

Frequently asked questions
How long does Slack stay active on iPhone?
Only while the Slack app is open and the screen is on. iOS suspends Slack within seconds of backgrounding or locking, and your dot goes grey. iPhones with Always-On displays make no difference - a locked iPhone reports away.
How long does Slack stay active when you use your phone?
Using other apps: not at all - you show away. Using the Slack app with the screen on: the whole time. Slack on mobile counts foreground use only.
Does Slack stay online on your phone overnight?
No. Charging overnight with Slack installed does not keep you online; the app is suspended while the phone is locked. If you appear online overnight, another signed-in device (usually an awake desktop) is reporting activity.
Does Slack set you away after inactivity even if you set yourself active?
Yes. There is no manual "force active" state. Clearing an away status returns you to automatic detection, and the 10-minute idle timer applies again immediately.
Is the green dot accurate?
It is accurate about input, not about work. Ten minutes of reading a printout marks you away; a mouse jiggler marks an empty chair active. Treat it as "this person's device saw input recently" - nothing more.

Cloud-based. No downloads. Works 24/7 even when your laptop is off.
If you landed here because your dot keeps going grey while you are still working, you have two real options: babysit your input on every device, or set a schedule once. Slack Green keeps your Slack presence active during the working hours you pick - server-side, no downloads, no browser tab to leave open - and your dot follows your schedule instead of Slack's 10-minute timer. There's a free trial, no credit card required, and it takes about two minutes to set up.
