What Does 👀 Mean? The Eyes Emoji in Slack, and in Hindi

In Slack, the eyes emoji 👀 as a reaction means "I have seen this and I am looking at it." It claims a request without a reply, and a ✅ :white_check_mark: added later means it is done. Slack's help center uses the same pair for request channels: 👀 for "I'm looking at this for you" and ✅ for "I've fixed the issue".

Outside work, 👀 means "I'm watching" or "this looks interesting", and in a group chat it can mean "I see what you did there". In a work channel, read it as "on it" unless your team agreed on something else. 👀 meaning in Hindi and Spanish

The emoji means the same thing in every language. Many people search for it in their own, so here it is in the two we see most:

• • Hindi: 👀 (आँखें, the "aankh wala emoji") means "मैं देख रहा हूँ", I am looking, or "नज़र रखे हुए हूँ", I am keeping an eye on it. In a group chat it often means "interesting, I'm watching what happens next". At work it means "seen, I'm on it", the same as in Slack.
• • Spanish: 👀 means "estoy mirando" or "lo estoy viendo". In a chat it can mean "qué interesante"; on a work request it means "lo reviso".

What 👀 then ✅ looks like

We posted a request in a test workspace, reacted 👀, replied in the thread, then added ✅. On the right is what anyone sees when they hover over a reaction: who reacted, and the emoji's name.


• • 👀 on a request: "I have seen this and I am on it." Others can see it is claimed.
• • 👀 on news or a proposal: "Seen, reading it." Slack has no read receipts, so teams use a reaction instead.
• • 👀 in a message: "look at this" or "interesting", as outside Slack.
• • ✅ after 👀: done. Put the detail in a thread reply, as in the picture, so the person who asked knows what changed.

When someone reacts 👀 to your request, wait for the ✅ or the thread reply before you follow up. To find requests someone claimed but nobody closed, search has::eyes: -has::white_check_mark:. These are the usual meanings at work. Every code below worked as a reaction in our test workspace.

Three things the test turned up:

• • :blue_circle: does not exist. Slack answered invalid_name. The blue circle is :large_blue_circle:. An older version of this page printed the short name.
• • :thumbsup: and :+1: are the same emoji. After :+1:, adding :thumbsup: returned already_reacted.
• • One person can add 23 different reactions to one message. The 24th returned too_many_reactions. A bot gets its own 23, which we measured in the reactions.add API test.

Your team may also have custom reactions such as :ack: or :lgtm:. They are not built in: :ack: returned invalid_name in a new workspace. Hover over any reaction to see its name, as in the picture above. Shortcodes for the rest are in the Slack emoji codes list.

Reaction sets for request and approval channels

A legend pinned in the channel or its canvas stops people from reading the same emoji two ways. Slack's help center suggests 👀 for claimed, ✅ for fixed, 🔴 for urgent, 🔵 for a question and ⚪ :white_circle: for feedback. For sign-off channels, a set for "approved", "sounds good" and "needs changes" is in Slack emoji for approved, and a longer key for in progress, noted and done is in Slack emoji for done.

If the built-in set does not have the word you want, such as "ack" or "shipped", make one with the Slack emoji maker and add it with these steps. Short words stay readable at reaction size; three-word emoji do not.

Reactions to avoid, and status emoji

👀, 👍 and ✅ mean "noted" or "done", so they read as cold on sad news. The reactions that fit there are in Slack emoji for condolences. Outside requests, 👀 can also look like a side eye; the closer built-in match is covered in side eye emoji for Slack.

Emoji next to a name are statuses, not reactions. 🌴 is Slack's "Vacationing" status, so the person is away; 🎧 appears on its own during a huddle; 🤒 usually means out sick. What each status and dot means is in Slack status icons meaning.
