Slack Slash Commands List: Every Built-in Command (Tested)

Slack's built-in slash commands run actions from the message box: type /, the command and any text after it, then press Enter. We pulled the list Slack's own server returns (commands.list) in our test workspace on 4 October 2026: 19 built-in commands plus 5 aliases. The ones people use most are /away and /active to set your presence, /status for your custom status, /dnd to pause notifications, /remind for reminders and /msg to send a DM. Typing / also opens a menu of shortcuts such as "Toggle dark mode" and "View all your drafts", which are not slash commands of their own.

This is the full list from Slack's commands.list method (Slack web app, Free plan), with Slack's own descriptions:

Aliases that run the same command: /dm = /msg, /join = /open, /close = /leave, /part = /leave, /kick = /remove.

Two things in this list correct older guides, including an earlier version of this page:

• • /away and /active still work. We ran them in a DM and read our presence from Slack's API each time. /away set manual_away: true, a second /away set us back to active, and /active cleared the manual away and replied "You are now marked as active." Neither posts a message to the conversation.
• • /status sets your custom status, not away or active. Its usage is /status :emoji: your text, or /status clear.

What the / menu shows besides commands



Typing / opens a menu called Shortcuts. It mixes real commands (/remind, /collapse, /expand, /feed, /me, /open, /shrug, /who) with actions written in words. We typed each name that other guides list as a command and noted what the menu offered (in a DM, web app, Free plan):

Channel actions such as rename and description did not appear in a DM; they show up inside a channel, and some are limited to owners and admins. Apps you install add their own commands, such as /giphy or /jira, and they appear in the same menu.
