Slack Green

Open the channel, click its name, go to Settings and choose Change to a private channel. We tried it as a regular member on a free workspace: Slack showed the option and then failed with Something went wrong.

To join a Slack workspace, open the invite link or email someone in it sent you, enter your email, and type the code Slack emails you. We joined our own test workspace with a new account and recorded every screen.

A Slack webhook call that works in your terminal often fails from cron. We ran six crontab entries and a launchd agent on a Mac for 10 minutes, logged each failure (empty env var, % in crontab, JSON quoting, macOS privacy block) and the script that posted every minute.

Slack's legacy Outgoing WebHooks still install on a Free workspace in November 2026. We set one up, sent 15 trigger messages through a tunnel, and logged the exact payload, how trigger words match, which replies Slack posts and when it gives up.

Slack's docs say link_names now links only user groups. On November 2, 2026 a bot token with link_names=true still turned @name, #channel and @here into real mentions, in plain text, section blocks and incoming webhooks.

Install Slack's free RSS app, click Add RSS integration, paste the feed URL and pick a channel, or type /feed subscribe in the channel. In our test on October 31 Slack checked the feed every 20 minutes, and items already in the feed were never posted.

Click your profile picture, then Profile, then Edit, and type your pronouns in the Pronouns field. If the field is missing, an admin has to turn on Pronouns Display first. We tested where pronouns appear on October 31.

Slack's Do Not Disturb API is five methods: dnd.setSnooze, dnd.endSnooze, dnd.endDnd, dnd.info and dnd.teamInfo. Setting DND needs a user token. We ran each one on October 31 and found that dnd.endSnooze inside a scheduled DND window also ends the schedule.

conversations.replies returns a thread's parent and its replies. We paged a 25-reply thread on October 31, 2026: without oldest the pages run newest first, and with oldest plus a cursor one reply went missing at every page break.

Slackbot custom responses are now called Automated Messages, under Customize workspace. We sent 23 test messages on October 31, 2026 to see which ones get a reply, and where Slackbot stays quiet.

Click Agents & tools, then Apps, open the app and click Add to Slack, then Allow. Then add it to each channel from the channel's Agents & apps tab. Screenshots from a Free workspace on October 31, 2026.

Slack's general channel (#all-<workspace> in new workspaces) can be renamed and limited to admins, but not archived, deleted, left or made private. We tried each as the workspace owner on October 29, 2026.

A Slack canvas cannot embed raw HTML or an iframe. Paste a link and choose Card instead: YouTube played inside the card and Spotify showed its player, while Vimeo and Google Sheets did not. Tested October 29, 2026.

Three Slack canvas examples you can paste in as Markdown (weekly update, meeting notes, onboarding checklist), the 18 templates Slack offers on the Free plan, and what broke when we pasted each one on October 29, 2026.

Slack canvases have their own keyboard shortcuts: Cmd + Option + 1 to 3 for headings, Cmd + Shift + 7, 8 and 9 for lists and checklists, and / for an insert menu that adds dates and reminders. We pressed every formatting shortcut in a real canvas on October 28, 2026.

Slack canvases have no Duplicate button. To copy one, select all, copy, and paste into a new canvas, or copy it by API. We tested both on October 28, 2026: headings and lists came through, but links to sections still pointed at the old canvas.

Every Slack canvas already has a table of contents: hover the short lines at the left edge and a list of all headings opens. For a contents list inside the canvas, copy a link to each heading and paste them as a list. We tested both on October 28, 2026.
