Does Slack Show When You Are on Mobile?
No. The presence dot looks identical from every device, with no phone badge or label. What coworkers can infer from the dot's rhythm, and what stays invisible.
On this page
No. Slack shows the same filled green dot whether you are on the desktop app, a browser tab, or the phone, and there is no phone badge, icon, or label next to it. Coworkers cannot see which device you are using, on any plan.
We build Slack Green, a tool that manages this exact dot, so this page also covers what people can infer from the dot's behavior even without a badge.
What the dot does on the phone
The rules behind the dot differ by device, even though the dot looks the same:
- • On desktop you stay green for 10 minutes after your last input inside Slack.
- • On the phone you are green only while the app is open on screen, and you flip to gray within seconds of switching away or locking the phone. Push notifications by themselves do not make you green.
- • Short green bursts. Green for half a minute, gray again: that pattern matches someone checking Slack from a phone. A desktop session holds green for at least 10 minutes.
- • Green right after a ping. Tapping a notification opens the app and turns you green for exactly as long as you read.
- • Nothing in between. A phone in your pocket shows plain gray,
The full per-device table is in how long does Slack stay active.
What coworkers can infer anyway
No badge exists, but the rhythm can hint:
An observant coworker reading rhythm is the ceiling. There is no interface that states the device, and admin logs show device type to admins only, never to coworkers.
If you want the dot steady while mobile
Nunca más aparezcas como "ausente" en Slack
Basado en la nube. Sin descargas. Funciona 24/7 incluso con tu laptop apagada.
The phone cannot hold the dot green, which is the whole mobile problem. If you work from your phone and want the dot to show working hours rather than app-open seconds, a server-side schedule does that: how to keep Slack active compares the options, including ours.
Frequently asked questions
Does Slack show if you are on mobile? No. The dot is identical across devices and carries no device label.
Does Slack show active on mobile? Yes, while the app is open on screen you show the normal green dot. It drops within seconds of backgrounding.
Can my boss see I answered from my phone? Not from presence. Admins can see device type in access logs; coworkers see only the dot and your messages.
Why does my dot keep flashing green and gray? That is the phone pattern: green while the app is open, gray when it closes. The rhythm is explained in why Slack goes idle so fast.
The short version
No badge, no label, same dot. The only tell is rhythm: phones produce short green bursts, desktops produce 10-minute holds, and a schedule produces whatever hours you choose.
