A Slack member ID is the U... code that identifies a person. Copy it from their profile under the three-dot menu, or look it up with users.info and users.list. Tested in two workspaces, with the ID formats we found.

Slack answers too many calls with HTTP 429 and a Retry-After header. We burst chat.postMessage, conversations.history and an incoming webhook from an internal app and logged every response: where the 429s started, the bodies, and a retry loop that never hit one.

files.upload now returns method_deprecated. Use files.getUploadURLExternal, POST the bytes, then files.completeUploadExternal, or files_upload_v2 in the SDK. Tested with curl and Python, including two silent failures.

channel_not_found means Slack cannot see the channel with the token you used: a wrong ID, a name that does not exist, a private channel the bot is not in, or a channel in another workspace. Each case tested on a real bot.

not_in_channel means the bot is not a member of the channel you posted or read from. Public channel: conversations.join or chat:write.public. Private channel: /invite the app. Every response here came from a real app.

Slack returns missing_scope when the token lacks a scope the method needs. The response names it in 'needed'. Add that scope, reinstall the app, and call again. Tested on a real app.

Open the emoji picker, click Skin Tone at the bottom right and pick one of six hands. We tested where the default applies on 29 September 2026: the picker, autocomplete and reactions use it, but a fully typed :thumbsup: does not.

Slack has no text color option in messages or canvases, and the API rejects a color style. We tested every route on 29 September 2026. A hex code gets a color swatch, inline code is red, and app messages can carry a colored bar.

Slack has no spoiler formatting. We sent Discord's ||text||, Reddit's >!text!< and //text// in Slack on 29 September 2026: all three show in plain sight. A thread reply is the workaround that hides the answer.

You can type a URL into a Slack status, but it shows as plain text that nobody can click. We tried a pasted URL, Markdown and Slack's own link syntax on 29 September 2026; none became a link.

Click the channel name and read the last line of the About tab: Channel ID, with a copy button. We also ran the API calls that fail when you pass a channel name instead of the ID, and the fix.

The headphones icon in Slack means huddles: the button that starts one, a live huddle next to a channel, the bar you are in. We started a huddle alone to show every spot, and checked whether you can huddle in your own DM.

We typed every common markdown shortcut into a Slack canvas. Headings, lists, checklists, quotes and code convert as you type; a single *star* makes bold, not italic; links, dashes for a divider and ==highlight== stay as plain text.

A Slack huddle has two backgrounds: the one behind you on camera, and the theme behind the whole huddle window. Where each one is, what you can pick, and why many people see no upload button.

Set a reminder on a Slack message from its three-dot menu, then watch where it goes. We tested it on 29 September and 8 October 2026: the message waits in To-dos (formerly Later) and fires as a card in Activity, with no Slackbot DM.

Slack's own reminder bot is /remind, which also reminds whole channels. If you are building one, reminders.add still works with a user token, but one-time reminders it creates land in the To-dos tab where reminders.list cannot see them.

Most broken Slack reminders are misread commands, or reminders that did fire but went to Activity and Later instead of a Slackbot DM. Each failure below was reproduced in Slack on 29 September 2026.

One-time Slack reminders can only be moved to a new time from the To-dos tab, called Later until October 2026. Recurring and channel reminders cannot be edited at all: delete them from /remind list and set them again.

A lot of pages say Slack waits 30 minutes before showing you away. Slack's own docs say 10. What the online dot really tracks, and how far to trust it.

To turn a video into an emoji, cut 1 to 3 seconds, crop it to a square, scale it to 128 x 128 and save it as a GIF under 128 KB for Slack or 256 KB for Discord. One tested ffmpeg command, a script that finds the frame rate and colors that fit, and a free browser tool that shrinks the GIF for you.

To make a custom Discord emoji, crop an image to a square, keep it under 256 KB, name it with letters, numbers and underscores, and upload it with Add Emoji in the emoji picker or Server Settings, Emoji. Yes. Slack messages, including DMs, can be requested in a lawsuit or an investigation. Most requests go to the company that owns the workspace, which exports them. Slack itself gives out message content only with a search warrant and tells the company first. Slack's own policy, its disclosure numbers, legal holds, and what deleted messages mean.

Switching between Online, Idle and Do Not Disturb sends no notification. But friends on the Discord mobile app can get a push when you come online, set a new custom status, or start a game, and you cannot stop Discord from sending it. They can turn it off on their side; you can go Invisible.

Clockify tracks idle time only if you turn on idle detection, and only you see it: after the minutes you set with no mouse or keyboard input, it asks whether to keep or discard that time. Admins can see screenshots and GPS on paid plans, not idle time or the auto tracker.

If your Discord status will not change, you are usually clicking the wrong spot: the status list now sits behind the current status line in your profile panel. Other causes are a manual Idle that never ends, an app that missed the update, a custom status timer, and Discord outages. Fixes for desktop, browser and mobile.
