Slack shows you active when you are not because one connection still counts as active: a forgotten tab, another computer, your phone screen, a huddle or an app signed in as you. We measured it with users.getPresence, and show how to find it in Access Logs.

Microsoft Teams stays on Away (yellow) while you work when you set Appear away or a status duration, when the phone app is in the background, when Teams on the web cannot see activity outside the tab, or when presence is stale. Fix it by resetting your status, closing Teams on other devices, and signing out and in.

A Slack status that will not update is usually a status you set yourself blocking the calendar, an app that has not synced, a status set in another workspace, automatic statuses turned off, or a stale client. How to tell which one, fix it, and tell a stuck status from a stuck dot.

A deleted Slack message disappears for everyone, admins included. We checked as a workspace Owner: the Free plan does not track deletions, the Standard Export leaves out deletion logs, and only paid-plan retention or a legal hold keeps a copy.

Slack does not track GPS. Its access log records each sign-in's IP address with a country, city and internet provider, which Owners and Admins can see only on paid plans. We checked our own log, the Free-plan API and the Mac app's permissions.

caffeinate is the built-in macOS command that keeps a Mac awake. Run caffeinate -d to stop the display sleeping, -i to stop idle sleep, add -t for a time limit, and press Ctrl+C to stop. Every flag with examples, and why awake is not active in Slack.

You can keep a work computer awake without admin rights: raise the sleep and screen timeouts in Settings, run caffeinate on a Mac, use PowerToys Awake or presentation mode on Windows, or a browser Wake Lock tab. None of them beat an IT lock policy, and none keep Slack or Teams active.

Slack opens in the browser when the link goes to app.slack.com or the browser cannot hand off to the app. We tested both link types on a Mac and show how to check the slack:// handler.

@here notifies only active members, @channel every member of the channel, and @everyone the whole workspace from the general channel. Tested in real Slack: none of them work in a thread, even with Also send to channel ticked, and @everyone typed elsewhere is plain text.

Slack uses a lot of memory because the desktop app is Electron, a Chromium browser running Slack's web app, and each workspace, busy channel, GIF and huddle adds to it. Slack engineering measured about 130 MB to 960 MB per workspace. What drives it, and how to cut it.

When Slack keeps showing unread messages but there are none, the badge usually comes from Threads, another workspace, the Activity or To-dos tabs, or a stale cache. Press Shift+Esc to mark everything read, open Threads, and clear the cache if the badge stays.

Slack channels usually disappear from the sidebar because of a filter: Active only hides conversations with no new activity in 30 days, and muted channels can be hidden.
