How to Keep Slack Active: Every Method That Works in 2026
Slack marks you away after 10 minutes without input, and there is no setting to change it. Every method that keeps your status active, what each one costs, and which ones quietly fail.
On this page
Slack flips you to away after 10 minutes without input in the app. There is no setting to change that timer. If you read documents, sit in Zoom calls, or think for a living, your dot goes gray while you are working.
This page covers every method people actually use to keep Slack active, what each one costs, and the tricks that look like they work but do not. We build Slack Green, a server-side tool in the last category, and the trade-offs listed here include ours.
What counts as activity in Slack
Slack counts interaction with Slack itself. Typing in a Slack window, clicking, scrolling, switching channels. Activity anywhere else on your computer does not count. You can type all day in your editor and Slack still marks you away, because the input never touched Slack.
The timer is per session, and any one of your signed-in devices can hold you green. Desktop input resets the 10-minute clock. On the phone app you are active only while Slack is on screen. The exact numbers for every surface are in how long does Slack stay active, and the detection logic is taken apart in why Slack goes idle so quickly.
The tricks that do not work
Half the advice that ranks for this question fails quietly. Save yourself the testing:
- • "Set yourself as active" in the menu. It flips your status once. The 10-minute countdown keeps running and flips it back.
- • Playing a YouTube video. Media playback is not Slack input. You go away at minute ten with the video still playing.
- • Keeping the laptop awake. Tools like caffeinate or Amphetamine stop the machine from sleeping, which prevents the instant-away that sleep causes, but they do not generate Slack activity. Details in does Amphetamine keep Slack active.
- • A status emoji or text. Status text and the presence dot are separate systems. Setting "In a meeting" does not touch the dot.
- • Typing in other apps. Slack cannot see it, and does not track your mouse outside its own window either.

| Mouse jiggler (hardware) | $10-20 | Required | No | Mostly |
| Mouse jiggler (software) | Free | Required | No | Weakest |

Mouse jigglers
A hardware jiggler pretends to be a mouse and nudges the cursor. It keeps the computer awake, and if the cursor sits over the Slack window the movement counts as Slack activity. That is the catch. Jiggling the cursor over your email client does nothing for your Slack dot.
Software jigglers do the same thing with a script. They are free, and they are also the first thing corporate device monitoring flags. The full comparison is in Slack Green vs mouse jigglers.
Browser extensions
If you run Slack in a browser tab, an extension can simulate in-tab activity. This targets the right thing, activity inside Slack, but extensions live and die by Chrome Web Store policy. The most popular one was pulled in 2024. Your browser also has to stay open on an unlocked machine.
The second device trick
Slack checks presence across all your sessions, so a phone with the Slack app open and the screen forced on keeps you green. It drains the battery, the screen has to stay unlocked, and iOS suspends the app when it decides to. Setup and limits are in keeping Slack active on mobile.
Solo huddles
Being in a huddle counts as active for the whole call. Starting a huddle with yourself works until a coworker notices you have been in a call alone for three hours.
Server-side presence
A server-side tool signs in as your Slack session and refreshes your presence from a server. Nothing runs on your machine. You can close the laptop and stay green until your schedule says otherwise.
This is what Slack Green does. It authenticates with your own session tokens, the same xoxc and xoxd pair the Slack web client uses, because a bot token cannot set your personal presence. You can run it on a schedule so your dot follows your working hours, and if you would rather hold the tokens yourself there is a self-hosted CLI. The honest trade-off: you are trusting a service with a session token, so read the security notes before picking any tool in this category, including ours.

Frequently asked questions
How do I keep my Slack status active all the time? Either keep generating input inside a Slack window, or use a tool that does it for you. Nothing in Slack's own settings does this. The closest built-in control is turning off the away flip while the app is open, and Slack does not offer one.
Can you set Slack to always active? Not in the product. There is no always-active setting, and "Set yourself as active" resets your status once without stopping the timer. Every working approach comes from outside Slack.
How do I keep the Slack dot green without touching the mouse? The two options that need no input from you are the second device trick and a server-side service. Everything else on the list simulates input somewhere.
Does keeping Slack open keep me active? No. An open window without input still flips to away at ten minutes on desktop. On the phone, backgrounding the app flips you in seconds.
Is any of this against Slack's rules? Automating your own session sits in a gray zone Slack has never enforced against individuals, and your employer's policy usually matters more. We wrote the realistic version in will I get caught.
The short version
لا تظهر أبداً كـ "غائب" على Slack
يعمل على السحابة. بدون تنزيلات. يعمل 24/7 حتى عندما يكون الكمبيوتر مغلقاً.
Slack's 10-minute timer has not changed in years, and no setting turns it off. Simulated input works while the machine is on. A second device works until the phone sleeps. A server-side tool is the only method that works with the laptop shut, which is the whole reason Slack Green exists. Try it free, setup takes about two minutes.
